For this step, the hotter the water, the faster this process can go! Warm tap water will do the job, but boiled water works even better. Mix the hot water in with the wallpaper removal solution. Putting the two together and spraying this across the wallpaper (an empty spray bottle works great here), will help to break down the wallpaper faster.

It’s really important to give the hot water solution time to properly soak into the wallpaper. So, once an 8 – 10 foot section has been sprayed, then let it sit for 5 – 10 minutes. Then upon waiting for a section to really soak in, it’s good to go back and work on removing the previous section of wallpaper.

This step may get a little bit messy and frustrating, but that’s okay! A little time and extra patience and it will get there. Once the section is completely soaked, go to the top of the wall or any edge and begin to peel off the wallpaper. Of course, it might not peel off all in one go — there will definitely be some sections that won’t! The use of a scraper will definitely help here in removing those sections that are really stuck to the wall.
Throughout the peeling and wallpaper removal process, it may have to be repeated a few times due to the nature of wallpaper. There are several layers after all, right? The first coat (usually shiny), is called the skim layer followed by the actual paper and then the adhesive.

A latex based primer simply won’t due here as since there was wallpaper on the wall for years and then a water solution to remove it, a latex primer as well as an interior latex paint can end up bubbling on the wall after application.
