ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is the cost of popcorn ceiling removal?
Important to notice, although we will provide different costs, interior painting at Home Painters Toronto starts at $1,995 + HST. So what can you do if you have a smaller project? Well, consider bundling other painting, carpentry or handyman services to grow your project and get a better price.
Important: all costs include removal, plastering and sanding but no painting after. It’s a good idea to bundle the painting in the service to get a better deal.
Approximate costs for popcorn ceiling flattening ‘per square foot’
- Cost of popcorn ceiling removal: $6 to $12 + HST
Approximate prices for popcorn ceiling removal
- Small to medium houses: $4,000 to $6,000 + HST
- Medium to large houses: $6,000 to $10,000 + HST
- Large to XL houses: $10,000 to $20,000+ + HST
2. How long will my project take?
Approximate completion times for popcorn ceiling removal
- Small to medium houses: 3 to 5 business days
- Medium to large houses: 5 to 7 business days
- Large to XL houses: 7 to 10 business days
Most jobs will take 2 and 5 days. But if your in a rush, inquire about our 1 or 2 day painting services.
3. Who will you be sending to do my project?
The project will be completed by our in-house painters, who are all experienced and professionally trained (and not subcontractors).
4. Will my furniture and belongings be protected throughout this process? Because I know it can get quite messy.
Since popcorn ceiling removal can be such a messy process, you can be assured that our team uses plastic sheeting and drop cloths to protect your furniture, walls and flooring throughout the entire process. And they will leave the space in the same manner in which they found it. We also make use of special tools which help to minimize the dust that are made to suck up approximately 80% of the dust throughout the process.
What could affect the price of popcorn ceiling removal?
- Difficulty to reach (strange corners that require special machinery to get to).
- How soon you want it done, and how fast you need it done. Consider that if you’re in a rush and your painting company has a busy week they might need to pay for extra hours or even move or cancel a job, and that could increase the price.
- Tied to the previous point, if you have a flexible schedule you can take advantage of a low season like the end of winter or the end of summer to get it done probably at a better rate.
- The size of the job. The more work you give to your painting company, the lower the per-unit cost. How does this make sense? Well, some materials are cheaper by volume but also, moving around less or spending more time at one job decreases all the logistics and prep work.
- Number of colours: if you can keep it to 5 colours or under, you will not see a price increase. The reason? there’s less difficulty to do the job and less paint or stain waste.
- Different types of paint can increase the cost. We use high-quality Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore paint so you can rest assured you’re well covered. Nevertheless, if you want something very specific or ultra-premium that can potentially increase the price.
- Payment terms (i.e. Visa vs e-transfer). A lot of clients like to use their credit cards for many reasons, however, these payments come with a fee that increases the overall price.
- The amount of preparation involved. (i.e. isolating to avoid painting undesired areas, removing plants, covering and taping). We normally don’t move your furniture and personal belongings so if you need help with that we can do it but it will add more time to the process and will increase the bill. (TIP: we can help on the spot to move some really large furniture, so don’t get hurt trying to do that and as long as it’s a fast move we’ll just do it for you!)
- Heights: we need to bring scaffolding and assembling and disassembling will add time, thus increasing the price

MORE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is removing a popcorn ceiling worth it?
Yes, removing a popcorn ceiling is often worth it! It can modernize your home and make rooms feel more spacious. Additionally, popcorn ceilings can trap dust and allergens, so removal can improve your indoor air quality. Just be sure to have it tested for asbestos if your home was built before the 1980s.
Can you remove a popcorn ceiling yourself?
Yes, you can remove a popcorn ceiling yourself, but it’s a labor-intensive job. You’ll need a few tools like a spray bottle, a putty knife, and some safety gear. Be sure to test for asbestos in older ceilings before attempting to remove it.
How much does it take to remove popcorn ceiling?
Removing popcorn ceilings typically costs between $5 to $9 per square foot. This price covers everything from labor to materials, ensuring the job is done properly. Keep in mind that the bulk of this cost comes from the extensive labor involved in the process.
Does removing popcorn ceiling make a mess?
Yes, removing popcorn ceiling can create a bit of a mess. The process involves scraping, which can lead to dust and debris falling. However, covering furniture and floors with drop cloths can help contain the mess. With proper preparation, you can manage it and keep your space tidy.
Are popcorn ceilings unhealthy?
Popcorn ceilings can be unhealthy if they contain asbestos, which was commonly used in the past. If your ceiling was installed before the 1980s, it’s best to have it tested. If it does contain asbestos, it’s important to hire a professional for safe removal. Always prioritize your health and safety!
Why are popcorn ceilings no longer popular?
Popcorn ceilings have lost their charm mainly due to safety concerns. Before the late 1970s, many of these textured ceilings contained asbestos, which can be dangerous when disturbed. Is it OK to leave popcorn ceiling?
Yes, it’s generally okay to leave a popcorn ceiling as long as it’s in good condition and not harming your home’s value. What happens if you scrape off popcorn ceiling?
If you scrape off a popcorn ceiling without proper precautions, you risk exposing yourself and your family to asbestos fibers, which can linger in your home for a long time. It’s safest to have a team of three professionals handle the removal to ensure the process is done correctly and safely.

Popcorn ceilings can last for decades if cared for properly. However, it’s common for them to show signs of wear and tear as they age. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help, but eventually, a refresh or removal might be needed to keep your home looking modern and fresh.
How to cover up a popcorn ceiling?
To cover up a popcorn ceiling, you have a few great options. You can simply install ordinary drywall over it, use a prefinished grid-plank system like Armstrong’s Easy-Up, attach furring strips followed by tongue-and-groove planks or beadboard paneling, or go for a skim coating.
What is the cheapest way to get rid of popcorn ceiling?
