The two main reasons why homeowners look to do some exterior house painting is to beautify it in order to increase curb appeal and to protect it from the rigors of the harsh Canadian weather elements. It is important for your home to look up-to-date, modern, and well kept, and also to uphold the elegance of your neighbourhood and protect it against preventable damage. Whether you are selling, maintaining, or just purchased your home, it makes sense to keep up with your exterior painting.

Usually yes, painters can do it for you but that will add on the hours of your project and it will increase your overall estimate. But!, if there’s any oversized furniture that you cannot move on your own, it’s normally ok to ask them to give you a hand to move it a bit to allow them to paint.

WHAT FACTORS COULD AFFECT THE PRICE OF EXTERIOR PAINTING?
The cost of painting the outside of a house depends on different factors. When planning your budget, pay attention to the following items:
- Home size. The bigger the house, the more paint and painters’ time needed.
- Difficulty to reach. This includes special equipment rentals, scaffolding, etc.
- How much preparation work is required. If we have to remove plants or do a lot of prep work to isolate a specific area that will increase the time we work on the project, thus, the final price.
- Season – When it comes to exterior painting your home, if you’re not in a hurry, find out with your painting company when is a good time for them to paint, this way you could potentially get a better deal.
- The number of colors and type of paint to be used. If you keep it below 5 colors the price will not increase; that’s because the complexity is less and there’s less paint waste. A high gloss finish costs more, as well as a color that requires multiple coats. At Home Painter we provide Benjamin Moore or Sherwin William paints which are excellent for most types of projects but if you need a very specific or super-premium paint that can increase the overall cost.
- An additional primer will be required if you go lighter than your previous paint job.
- Your roof’s shape – steep peaks or intricate architectural features (bargeboard). Again, this comes to how difficult and how much time it will take to paint specific areas.
- The scope of your project, are you including trims and windows?
- Some clients approach us because they did not have a good experience with their previous painters so we’ve got to start over! This is usually more expensive than starting from scratch because we have to do several amendments or redo patchwork, even paint before we do our thing. Unfortunately, we have to account for all this extra time. The good news is that professional painting companies like Home Painters Toronto provide you with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so you can rest assured that you won’t be in that position again!
Make arrangements with your professional painters in advance to complete some of the preparation work yourself and possibly save yourself some money. Getting rid of clutter and cleaning the exterior will make life easier for the painter and minimize the amount of work he will have to do.

MORE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. How much paint do I need for a 1500 square foot house exterior?
To paint a 1,500 square foot house exterior, you’ll need about five gallons of paint, if one gallon covers 300 square feet. This calculation is based on one coat of paint. If it’s just windows and doors, you could probably get 1 or 2 gallons maximum. If it’s soffits and fascia you’ll get another 3 to 4 gallons. If it’s siding or bricks, atleast 5 gallons. So it really depends on what you’re painting on the exterior.
2. What's the best paint for exterior house?
For the best exterior house paint, we recommend Sherwin-Williams Duration Exterior Acrylic Latex or A-100. For doors, we recommend Resilience or Emerald. We also recommend Benjamin Moore Aura or Regal. It’s known for its durability, which means fewer repaints over time. This paint forms a robust barrier against weather elements, ensuring your home looks great for longer. Choosing a durable option like this is key to maintaining your home’s exterior, saving you time and money in the long run.
3. Is it better to roll or spray exterior paint?
Spray painting is quicker and provides a more consistent finish, but it might be challenging for beginners. On the other hand, roll-on paint is cheaper and easier to handle, especially for those with little experience. So, if you value speed and a smooth look and don’t mind the learning curve, go for spray. Otherwise, rolling is a great, budget-friendly option.
4. What time of year is best to paint exterior of house?
As long as the weather above 10°C, you can even paint up to 30°C as long as you’re not painting in direct sunlight. Avoid the rain at all cost and avoid anything below 10°C when you are painting.
5. Do I need to prime the exterior of my house before painting?
If you’re just doing a repaint, then usually you can use the self priming paint. If you’re dealing with bare wood, new surfaces, rust surfaces or surfaces that anything other than painting on the top of paint, I recommend priming using an exterior latex or oil-based primer depending on the situation.
6. Can I paint my house exterior yourself?
Yes, definitely if you have the expertise and tools. But it’s very dangerous to homeowners because especially when you’re doing the second or third storey windows if you aren’t use to that. Only if you are experienced and if you’ve been trained on using ladders, working at heights training or has extensive experience with ladders.
7. Can you paint over old exterior paint?
Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint if it’s in good condition and firmly attached to the surface. Whether you need to prime first depends on the current paint’s type and state. If the old paint is glossy or oil-based, priming will help the new paint adhere better. Always make sure to clean and sand the surface before starting to ensure the best results.
8. Should you power wash house before painting?
No, depends on the situation but generally you do not need to powerwash becauce it can actually hurt and damage the surface. The only time you need to powerwash is if you have some terrible substance on it like oils, fungus, construction dust or anything really dirty and grimy. In which case you can powerwash but it’s crucial with the right nozzle and it’s far away enough otherwise you might wanna wash it by hand.
9. How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?
Usually 2 coats is typical and it’s best for exterior in general.
10. When not to paint the outside?
Anything below 10°C or if it’s raining. If it’s really hot in the outside, do not paint in the direct sunlight during summer months.
11. How many years does exterior paint last?
4 to 5 years minimum is typical. If it last 5 to 10 years, then it’s exceptional but sometimes when you’re facing Southwest those areas tend to get worst sun exposure so you might have to do those sides of the house more often like 3 to 5 years. North, East sides of the house shouldn’t have to paint as often.
12. What happens if it rains after painting the house?
If it rains right after, then it can actually wash the paint away and you might wanna repaint. But if it’s after about 2 to 4 hours then usually its okay, depends on how heavy the rain is.
13. Can you paint the house without washing it?
Sure, as long as no excessive grime, fungi, algae or any oil surface.
14. Do professional painters clean before painting?
Yes if needed, but sometimes it’s not needed. For example, sometimes the surface is just flaking a little you need to paint it, you dont need to wash it all off.
