We know how much Canadians love their homes and how important it is for us to take care of the exteriors as well. To drastically increase the curb appeal and allow your exteriors to truly shine staining your deck and fence is a must. If you spend time outdoors, it’s truly a great investment that you won’t regret every time you step outside. At Home Painters Toronto, we offer the top services for deck and fence staining. We can make help make your deck and fence look like new again!

One of the top concerns for clients when it comes to deck and fence stain is that they consistently wonder if they should even be staining it in the first place. The truth of the matter is that unless the wood is really rotted out and beyond repair, you can stain it. There might be some sanding, repair work and new panels involved in the prep process, but there is certainly no reason why your deck cannot be made beautiful again by professional house painters with stain!

How much should it cost to paint my deck? Well, that depends! It depends on the size of your deck, the health and quality of it, and what kind of shape it’s in. There are many reasons why you should stain your deck, and how it can actually save you money in the end. It is slightly cheaper to stain a deck than to paint one. Staining a deck can differ in price based on its size and the quality of the deck. If you keep up the maintenance of your deck, it can be 90% cheaper, than if you were to completely change your deck.

You can definitely boost curb appeal with small improvements to the exterior of your house. This method can be very labor-intensive and could deteriorate if not done properly, resulting in peeling or cracking. A professional opinion is always recommended before tackling a big project on your own, especially exterior projects.

WHAT COULD AFFECT THE PRICE OF DECK AND FENCE STAINING?

Different factors have an effect on how much aluminum siding painting costs. Make sure you account for the following items when planning your budget:

  1. Size of the job. The bigger the deck, the more stain will be necessary, but the cost per square foot will go down if it is bigger.
  2. Amount of preparation: Although the surface area is the primary factor in determining the cost of restoration, it ignores the fact that most objects are harder to stain. This is particularly relevant when it comes to railings because they can take a lot of stain despite having a small surface area. They are quite time-consuming and result in higher costs. On decks, the lattice is another object that can increase deck staining costs unexpectedly.
  3. Age of Existing Stain: How long it has been since the deck was last stained affects the cost. It’s not exactly the same as old paint, where you have to do more preparation before painting it again. Previously stained wood may also need a stain and sealer remover before the new stain will penetrate effectively. This will raise the cost of deck staining.
  4. Urgency speed: If your job needs to be completed urgently, more painters will be needed and this will cost you more.
  5. Time of the year. It is important to choose an appropriate time to realize your deck staining project as it will influence the cost of the whole process. Spring or fall is usually the best time.
  6. Payment terms i.e. Visa vs e-transfer. Several clients prefer to pay with a credit card, however, these payments all come with extra fees that just increase the total price.
  7. You realize your painting projects ended up messy because cheap painters did poor work, so you need to start again!

Exterior Deck Staining Before and After Result

Home Painters Toronto brushing on a natural semi-transparent stain from Sherwin Williams board by board.

When it comes to transparent stain – which can sometimes be referred to as a sealer or clear stain, there are a few things to consider. The first is that the UV protection is usually less and the time for a recoat is about once a year, though you can sometimes push it a few months longer.

Direct and prolonged sun exposure can change the colour of the wood and can affect the bonding in wood fiber. Using a transparent stain will keep the beautiful qualities of your lumber most visible. The grain and colour will come through clearly and the fiber will have protection against moisture damage.

The next thing to consider is oil-based versus water-based stain. In some exterior home projects, an oil-based stain will seep deep into the wood fiber and protect it for longer by repelling water damage – as long as the fiber was dry enough.

If it wasn’t dry enough before staining, then moisture may get trapped inside. Oil will last twice as long and there is no need for stripping before re-application. On the other hand, if you have a mixture of old and new wood panels or a worn surface area, a water-based stain can do a better job of covering imperfections.

Water-based stains tend to sit on the surface of the lumber, so again it is important that the wood is dry enough before coating, that way the stain doesn’t lock moisture in. And because it sits on the surface, it may peel eventually, which means sanding and stripping before recoating will lead to the best results.

Lastly, depending on the manufacturer you may have over a dozen stains to choose from. If you decide on a darker pigment, the less often you will need to re-stain. A translucent or semi-transparent sealer will tint your wood a slightly richer colour. The natural grain will still show through, though not as much. But whatever stain you choose, you are adding a protection that will make your surface last longer and look more vibrant.

MORE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

You should use a roller brush or sprayer to apply a steady coat of quality stain, such as Olympic Elite stains or Olympic MAXIMUM stains. If you see that too much wood stain has been used in an area, use a roller or brush to fix the imperfections. How often should you stain your deck?

Many homeowners wonder, “How often should I stain my deck?” To keep a deck looking great and prolong the life of the wood, a deck should be stained every two to three years. Other signs your deck needs staining are: The deck has mold or mildew buildup. Water soaks into the deck boards and no longer beads up.

However, as a natural material, wood on an outdoor deck means it is constantly exposed to the elements, which can degrade the material over time. That’s why applying finishing is crucial, as it adds a layer of protection over the wood against UV light, moisture, and other elements and prolongs its life.

Durability. Because paint forms a thicker, more protective film on the surface of the wood, it is generally considered to be more durable than stain. However, stain is known for its ability to preserve the natural beauty of the wood, which makes it a better choice for some types of wood and some aesthetic preferences.

Preparation for restaining a deck involves removing old stain. If you simply stain over a weathered stained deck without preparing the surface, you cannot expect the stain to look good and last long.

Over time, the sun’s rays will dull and fade the finish. When this happens, a fresh coat of stain can quickly restore your deck’s beauty. If you decide to leave your deck alone instead, expect the loss of color and shine to progress until your deck takes on a gray-ish, green-ish hue.

Shorter life span: On average, decks need to be stained every other year. A quality, professional paint job will last longer than a quality, professional deck staining. However, an oil-based semi-transparent stain can last for three to five years, which makes this option worth exploring for peace of mind.

Protective Benefits: Staining your fence extends its life by protecting against UV rays, moisture, and temperature changes, reducing warping and deterioration. Aesthetic Enhancement: A well-chosen stain can transform your fence into a statement piece that complements your home’s architecture and boosts curb appeal.

Transparent stain is best for new fences, or fences that have a great grain that you want to highlight. The stain will provide subtle color accents, but let the natural beauty of the wood really come through. This is often the most cost-effective choice.

There’s a difference between stain and paint. Stain penetrates into the wood, and it enhances the beauty of raw wood, while paint sits on the surface of the wood. You’ll need to reapply fence stain at least every three years, while you can reapply fence paint every five to six years.

Painting or staining a fence typically costs around $3 to $14 per linear foot or $1 to $3 per square foot. There are a few different factors that come into play when you’re calculating the total price of the job.

The chemicals and/or natural oils in the wood eventually dry out, causing the wood to grey and wear down. Fence staining replenishes the shield on the pickets and creates a barrier against precipitation and sun rays.

To enhance the wood’s color, staining should be fine. But to protect the wood against any chipping from impact, or from the elements, varnishing is your best choice. Many woodworkers decide to stain and varnish a wooden surface at the same time. Note if you use a water-based stain, use a water-based varnish.

You will still need to remove any gloss finish with 240-grit sandpaper so the box has a dull appearance, but you don’t need to remove the varnish completely.
